the philosophy

WHO?

We’re a couple of rowing enthusiasts named Rachel Freedman and Tara Morgan, and between us we have nearly 40 years of rowing, coaching, and coxing experience. We could spend days talking about this sport, and regularly find ourselves comparing notes on the perfect stroke, compliment sandwiches, and gnawing on callouses.

WHAT?

Steady State Network disrupts the popular, yet limited narrative about rowing culture. From the start, we’ve brought you dozens of intriguing backstories – the experiences on and off the water that make people the rowers, coaches, and coxswains they are today. From indoor rowing, to flat water masters, to coastal and ocean adventurers, together we explore rowing culture.

WHY?

We want to change how rowing is represented by creating engaging, thoughtful, and authentic content that flips the the narrative script often presented in other mainstream rowing-related media, which leans heavy towards coverage of collegiate, National Team, and Olympic athletes, from a white male dominated lens. There’s a lot more to the story.

AT STEADY STATE NETWORK, WE ARE COMMITTED TO THESE CORE VALUES:

  • DIVERSITY

  • BELONGING AND RESPECT

  • Curiosity

  • REFLECTION ABOUT OUR INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE CULTURAL IDENTITY AS A ROWING COMMUNITY

Steady State Network pledges to shape this media through the lens of strong allyship in our creation, and production of a podcast, website, and social media content. Established in 2020, we have sought from Day One to foster an open dialogue on representations in our community and hold a firm dedication to challenge the longstanding silence that has undervalued true inclusion in the sport.
